Pianos FAQ

How do I choose between a used and a new piano?

Think about who will be playing and how long you’d like it to be a fixture in your home.  If it’s relatively temporary, the depreciation on a used piano *may* be less severe than with a new piano.  That being said, a new piano will yield better sound quality, a more precise action and touch, increased durability and longevity, and will be a better practice tool in terms of enjoyment and motivation.  At West Music, we’re fortunate to be dealers for Steinway and Yamaha pianos – both makers invest tirelessly into improving their pianos year after year.  Modern pianos are built to last 40-50 years before extensive maintenance may be needed.  A used piano in the 20-40 year old range may require work exceeding the market value of the instrument, particularly if the hammers or pin-block are worn past a certain point.

How do I maintain my piano?

Developing a relationship with a qualified piano technician in your area is the best thing you can do to improve the health and durability of your instrument.  For a new piano, have it tuned twice a year for the first few years (then move to annual tunings).  For a used piano, tune it once a year and have a technician check the hammers for evenness and potential voicing from top to bottom, as well as the action for regulation to ensure all of the internal components are working correctly.

Why invest in a quality piano?

Resale value and longevity.  In addition to getting the latest and greatest designs from Yamaha or Steinway, you’ll also be enjoying an instrument that holds its value very well.  A well maintained piano will last much longer than a poorly maintained one, and with the help of the right technician, you can be sure the instrument will age gracefully.  At West Music, we recommend working with your private teacher or one of our Piano Consultants to find an instrument that aligns with your level of development and your personal goals.

How do I choose the right piano for my home?

Both Steinway and Yamaha produce a variety of pianos that would be appropriate for a home or institutional setting.  Think about aesthetics as well as what you’re hoping to achieve with the instrument.  If it’s simply a piece of furniture, we have templates and wood samples to help you pick the best size and finish to match your room.  If you don’t play piano but love listening to piano music, consider a Yamaha Disklavier or a Steinway Spirio (both are easy-to-use contemporary player pianos with extensive catalogs).  If there are several ambitious piano players in the family, you may require a more advanced instrument like a CX series Yamaha or Steinway NY grand.

Why should I steer clear of used Steinways?

Steinways that have been rebuilt without Steinway parts typically see about a 50% reduction in market value.  They aren’t to be judged alongside pianos built by a Steinway certified restoration center.  If you’re thinking about an older Steinway that’s had significant maintenance, it’s important to know both who did the work and what parts they used.  As any Steinway instrument is the sum of its parts, compromising on the materials or the quality of the technician can lead to wildly variable outcomes in terms of sound and feel/response.  If it’s of a certain age and still in original condition, keep in mind it may require costly maintenance like any other used piano.

Where can I find your inventory?

Shop Pianos At West Music - See Our Range of New/Used Pianos.  We keep this link updated with both new and used pianos in all of our locations.  While we house most of our pianos in our Coralville store (1212 5th St), you can also find a selection of new and used instruments in our Cedar Falls, Davenport, and Marion stores.
