Original Celesta Patent

The first Celesta was patented and built by Mustel.  The patent called for a "bell-like tone in which hammers set in motion by the keys strike tune steel bars resting on a wooden resonator."  Today, Schiedmayer Celesta is the only company producing Celestas consistent with this original patent. History of the Celesta

The Celesta was first invented in 1886 by Auguste Mustel in Paris. The Mustel company has now dissolved, but Schiedmayer GmbH has been continuously making celestas since 1890.
