High Tension drums are used by todays top Drum Corps, Universities, and high school marching ensembles. These drums are designed to handle the tension of a Kevlar or High Tension drum heads. These drums produce a very clean articulation with a quick decay.
Models include the Yamaha Sfz & MTS Snare Drums, Pearl Championship FFX & CarbonCore Snare Drums, and the Mapex Quantum Series Drums.
Standard Tension drums are popular for a more traditional sounds and are often much lighter in weight than high tension drums. These drums use regular Mylar drum heads at a much lower tension. These are popular with younger ensembles because of their lighter weight and the drum heads are softer on the players’ hands.
Models include the Yamaha Power-Lite Series Drums, Pearl Competitor Snare Drums, and the Mapex Qualifier Snare Drums.
Do not use a Kevlar head on a standard tension drum. The shell isn’t designed for high tension use and may collapse.
